Does Facebook actively spy on you? It it reading private messages and texts? Does the app track your phone calls and location? CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been grilled by lawmakers on many of these questions. But you may have more.

TRUE: Facebook tracks your location for several reasons, including so that you can "check-in" to certain places, letting your friends and family know where you are or where you've been. Facebook also uses your location to serve up ads.

The experiments allowed Facebook users to share messages with friends about what they were listening to on Spotify or watching on Netflix, Archibong said. He said the experiences were only available when users logged into the services through Facebook and were shut down nearly three years ago.

In order for you to write a message to a Facebook friend from within Spotify, for instance, we needed to give Spotify "write access." For you to be able to read messages back, we needed Spotify to have "read access." "Delete access" meant that if you deleted a message from within Spotify, it would also delete from Facebook. No third party was reading your private messages, or writing messages to your friends without your permission.

In a statement Tuesday, Facebook denied allowing its partners to ignore people's privacy settings. Netflix said that while it tried to use Facebook to boost its usability among customers, it never read users' private messages on the social media site.

You can use secret conversations to initiate a confidential discussion with your friends. The messages in private chats are end-to-end encrypted. Therefore, only the sender and the receiver will be able to see the messages. Additionally, the secret messages delete themselves after a certain time. The user stipulates this time.

It means that the normal chats we do on a day-to-day basis are under the watch of Facebook. Therefore, Facebook launched this secret conversation feature a few years ago. It was to shun privacy concerns. A secret conversation is a feature you can initiate from within your Messenger. The messages sent and received in this conversation are end-to-end encrypted. Therefore, only the sender and receiver can read the messages.

Apart from this feature, some hidden messages on your Facebook that you cannot see in your inbox. These are the messages that you get from those people who are not in your contacts. Therefore, these messages are under the button Message Requests. Moreover, some of the non-contact messages go to the spam folder. These messages are different from Facebook Messenger's secret conversation feature.

The secret conversation is a feature you can use exclusively. You can initiate a secret chat with any of your contacts. On the other hand, hidden Facebook messages are from individuals not on your contact list. These hidden messages are routed to the Message Requests and Spam message folder.

The best option is to use AirDroid Parental Control & Text Messages Monitoring App. If you have installed its paired app AirDroid Kids on your kids' Android phone and bind it to your mobile, it will let you access your kid's private conservation of Messenger. But it acts as a clone of their mobile devices' notifications. When they receive a notification that someone has sent a Secret Conversation to your kids, you will also get the notification. Then you can check them by mirroring your kids live screen to yours.

It is fine to see your kids' Messenger until and unless they do not know. However, once they know that you are reading their secret conversations, it may cause a rift. Furthermore, it may also provoke your kids to harm themselves. Many dangers are attached when you monitor your kids in the digital space.

To view the hidden messages on Facebook messenger on your Android device, click on "You May Know" to see different message requests or "Spam" to see the messages labeled as spam. You can choose to open a conversation or delete the messages according to your preference.

But cybersecurity experts warn that by exposing user information, including private messages, Facebook might have exposed users to security vulnerabilities like phishing, harassment, hacking, and identity theft.

"Spotify's integration with Facebook has always been about sharing and discovering music and podcasts. Spotify cannot read users' private Facebook inbox messages across any of our current integrations. Previously, when users shared music from Spotify, they could add on text that was visible to Spotify. This has since been discontinued. We have no evidence that Spotify ever accessed users' private Facebook messages."

If Facebook thinks you know someone based on connections with your current friends, it will deliver a new message from this person as a message request. If there's no evidence that you know the sender, Facebook sends them to your spam mailbox.

While you can't recover deleted Facebook Messenger messages, you can try some workarounds. Check to see if you archived the message instead of deleted it, or download your Messenger data and examine the report for the message you hope to retrieve. You can also try asking your contact if they have a copy of the chat.

Dear Facebookers - Your private inbox messages are now visible for all to see, from 2009 and later. This could get VERY awkward, very quickly... this is a new change from Facebook as of yesterday. Don't believe me? Read your timeline from those years... yikes! They look like wall posts..... they are not!

Origins: The September 2012 warning reproduced above, about a recent change to Facebook supposedly making users' private inbox messages visible to everyone, proved to be a false alarm. According to a 25 September 2012 article from Mashable (via CNN):

Rumors of a Facebook bug has users from all over the world worried about private messages showing up very publicly on Timeline pages. But the social network is debunking those claims, saying these messages are actually just older wall posts.

Some members in the U.S. have said their private messages from 2007 and 2008 are showing up on their Timeline, but Facebook said that the company hasn't found a bug and believes the discrepancy comes from a wider roll out of the newer Timeline layout on a global scale.

Facebook says that if you can comment or Like that activity, then it is a wall post and not a private message. In the past, users weren't able to comment and Like posts, so Facebook believes members new to Timeline are confusing old posts for private messages.

Here on the Tech team, we checked our own Facebook accounts to make sure. Indeed, older posts were showing up on our Timelines. But they were not the private emails, or direct messages, that are sent between Facebook users and are not visible to anyone else.

Of course, many of us shared our addresses, phone numbers and what now seem like very personal messages as wall posts because most of us a) didn't have more than 200 "friends" like we do now and B) we didn't know better then; Facebook was still a magical place and we were digitally naive.

A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline. Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users' profile pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy.

The response came in a blog post by the firm Wednesday after a New York Times investigation found that Facebook gave companies including Netflix, Spotify and the Royal Bank of Canada the ability to read, write and delete users' private messages. The report on Tuesday also said it permitted Microsoft's Bing search engine to view the names of nearly all of a Facebook user's friends without consent.

A spokesperson for Netflix told CNBC the streaming service had launched a feature in 2014 that enabled members to recommend TV shows and movies to their Facebook friends via Messenger or Netflix, but then shut it down in 2015. "At no time did we access people's private messages on Facebook, or ask for the ability to do so," the Netflix spokesperson said.

In a statement, Amazon said: "We only use information in accordance with our privacy policy." Spotify said it cannot read users' private Facebook inbox messages across any of its current integrations.

"Previously, when users shared music from Spotify, they could add on text that was visible to Spotify. This has since been discontinued. We have no evidence that Spotify ever accessed users' private Facebook messages," a spokesperson for the company said.

To access it on desktop, open Messenger by going to Messenger.com. Click your profile picture at the top-left of the screen and choose Message Requests. This will change your active view to show requests instead of normal messages.

Once you have this menu open using either method, it shows two tabs: You may know and Spam. You may know holds messages from friends of friends, or people that Facebook thinks you might have a connection to. Spam, as the name suggests, filters messages from people you have no connection with.

If this was your first time digging into your message requests box, you might be surprised how much is there. If you find that too many many messages are being filtered, or messages that should be caught in the filter are going to your primary inbox, you can adjust how Messenger deals with these.

You likely use emails the most when it comes to business communications. Just like with text messages, email platforms rank low on the list when it comes to security. Emails are written in plain text and are shared across insecure networks which means anyone who may be listening in along the way can easily intercept the message and read it. 350c69d7ab
